The traditional Islamic narrative claims that the Qur’an was revealed to Muhammad in the 7th century and that Mecca has always been the religious center of Islam. However, modern archaeological, textual‑critical, and historical research paints a completely different picture — one that fundamentally reshapes our understanding of how Islam emerged.

The earliest sources mention neither Muhammad nor Mecca. The first biographies and Hadith collections appear only 200–300 years after his death. A decisive turning point is the reign of the Umayyad Caliph Abd al‑Malik (685–705). He was the first to introduce the name “Muhammad” into official state inscriptions, to construct the Dome of the Rock in Jerusalem, and to redefine the religious identity of the Arab community. Under his leadership, the geographical and theological shift from Petra to Mecca began — a process later completed by the Abbasids. Only from the 8th century onward was Mecca declared the official center of prayer direction and pilgrimage tradition.
